Extreme will be broadcast on Setanta Ireland on Friday December 11th at 19:15. You can find Setanta on UPC channel 400 and Sky channel 423. Extreme is an exploration in adventure and presented by Kipper Maguire who tracks some of Ireland’s most extreme athletes and finds out what drives them. The athletes are Fergal Somerville, long distance swimmer, Easkey Britton, big wave surfer, Aileen Mann, thundercat racer, Ricky Bell, rock climber, Heather Irvine, adventure race, John O’Regan, ultra runner and Conor Heelan, BASE jumper and skydiver.

Extreme will broadcast again free to air (no subscription required) on the 4th of April at 3.45 pm. You can find Setanta on UPC channel 400 and Sky channel 423. Extreme has been featured on the radio as we approach the second screening on the 8th of March at 6.40 pm. You can hear Kipper speaking on Spin 103.8 here, RTÉ 2Fm with Ryan Tubridy here and Off the ball with Ultra Runner John O’Reganhere.

Extreme will broadcast March 8th 6.40 pm and is free to air on Setanta, channels UPC 400, Sky 423.

Fergal Somerville

Extreme is the story of athletes who go to their edge to find out what they can do. Fergal Somerville ultra swimmer who thinks nothing of a channel swim or a ice water swim in freezing conditions. Fergal is a swimming mentor to those who often fear the open seas but for him a swim hat and google – and his gold lame swimming togs – is often just enough to get him in the mood to do extreme swims and some fun ones too including jumping from the bridges of Dublin’s River Liffey for charity. A big-hearted swimmer with a big appetite for swimming challenges.

Easkey Britton

Easkey Britton has travelled the world surfing & teaching others how to surf, her adventures have led her to Iran, Hawaii and beyond. Easkey also co-founded an initiative called Waves of Freedom, the initiative is founded on the belief in surfing as a powerful medium for creating positive social impact and empowerment, especially for more vulnerable groups like youth and women in areas of the world where it is not always easy to follow your passion.

Outsider Awards – John O’Regan

I have been involved with Outsider magazine for many years. It’s a great publication covering the Irish outdoor scene. Every year they have their annual awards that celebrate those who have done incredible things in adventure sports and the outdoors.

The awards took place on January 29th in The Generator, Dublin. This year I got heavily involved in the awards. Acting as a judge & compere, I gave my tuppence worth on who should win.

Working on Extreme, I have spent a good bit of time with John O’Regan the ultra runner. John was up for the award “The most devoted”, in Extreme you can see why he has earned this honour. When John is not out training himself he can be found out at his club training others. He is extremely generous with his time. I remember one incident during a 24 hour race, John had been running for over 20 hours and I spotted him on the far side of the track giving another racer who was struggling, some coaching and encouragement. It was impressive to see that John’s dedication and passion for the sport goes beyond personal achievement and even in the midst of a competitive race, he is helping others.

John O’Regan is a phenomenal athlete but as humble as they come. He won the most devoted award and truly deserved it for all he gives to the sport of running.

Ticknock

It was a cold December morning when we met in Ticknock Co Dublin. Sadly, it was the final shoot for the documentary, which has been an amazing experience for me. I was there to meet former model Heather Irvine. Heather has gone from Modeling to endurance events a bit of difference alright

It was freezing, up in Ticknock part of the hill faces north so it can get really cold. Coilte have built several excellent Mountain Bike trails in the woods just above Dundrum in Dublin. We hit the trails and had a blast and it wasn’t long before we got warmed up. The trails are fast and exciting. I love mountain Biking because it’s always possible, in my many years of biking I have only been stopped by snow.

Over the last months I have had pleasure of meeting some of Ireland’s top Extreme Athletes and what impresses me most is that they dont do it for money, they do it because they love it.

Ultra Runner of the Year

We heard John O’Regan was up for an Athletics Ireland award. So we headed along with a camera to see what it was all about. I am not sure what I was expecting to see but when I entered the room i was blow away by the esteemed event. The large room was full, everyone sitting at large round tables, very fancy indeed.

The show was hosted by Greg Allen. John was up for Ultra runner of the year. I had a quick chat to him when I went in and he said he was a little nervous. Looking around the room it was who’s who of Athletics in Ireland . I spotted John Tracey, Pat Hickey and Michael Ring TD – Minister of State for Tourism and Sport and many more. John won and he happily received his award on stage. He is a quite, humble gentleman who is a phenomenal athlete . I spoke to him afterwards and came out with a classic quote .

“I don’t run to win awards but it nice when you get them”
